BREAKING FREE
This blog is about breaking free of a domestic violence situation.
The number one thing to do is, get help. Trust a good friend, find out where your local shelter is. They might have individual therapy or groups. if you can go to a private therapist make sure to do an interview. Go in there with questions for him/her. Working on a hotline, I have seen too many times therapist tells the victim to stay. What did you do, to him to get him so angry. Safe the marriage.
Read books on the subject of abuse. I will mention a few. I know two of the authors: "But He'll Change" by Joanna V. Hunter
"Getting Free" by Ginny NiCarthy
"The World's Top Ten Worst Men for Women Guide"
by Tamara Neal
Safety Planning: I am highlighting these in darker print.
- Pack a suitcase. Put it in a safe place.
- Make sure to get all of the your important papers together, knowing that you will never get them again.
- Take pictures of the wounds.
- If it is not physical, keep all of the threats on your cell phone
- Plan to leave when he is working. Be safe.
- If there is wounds go to the hospital. Have the doctor report the abuse. Never forget pictures.
- Make a signal with a neighbor that you can trust. Example: Blinds are shut. Be careful who to trust.
- Make sure you have 911 plugged into your cell.
- If you have children, tell them where they can go and be safe.
If you leave immediately run for your life. Call 911.
I go into more detail, with my forthcoming ebook.
